Vendor Expectations

You should make sure your vendor handles his own in house repairs and is properly insured. Make sure the process quoted is the repair received.
After a Babbitt bearing has been reconditioned and before shipping, make sure your bearing vendor performs quality control checks. Complete inbound and outbound reports should be faxed to you and also be attached to the shipment.

Look for these items:

Shaft clearances as requested

Oil relief's and oil holes should be the proper size and design

No taper in the bore

Thrust faces should be perpendicular to the bore

No porosity in the Babbitt

If water cooled, the bearing should have been checked for leaks

Horizontal joints should  mate properly

The Babbitt to housing bond has been checked  ultrasonically by certified technicians.

Equally important as quality to your plant's maintenance is vendor service. You, the customer, should have a vendor who can respond to your needs by picking up the bearing for immediate repair and holding the repair time to a minimum.

Babbitt bearings, when installed properly, should give years of service with little attention required. When the time comes to recondition a bearing, be sure to know what kind of quality and service you will get from your Babbitt bearing repair center before you ship.
